The Dalai Lama has been hospitalised in the Indian capital with a chest infection and is feeling better.

Spokesman Tenzin Taklha says the Dalai Lama is under medication and likely to spend a day or two in the hospital.

Takhla said the 83-year-old Dalai Lama was feeling much better now.

The Dalai Lama recently praised Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for handling the Christchurch mosque attacks and said others could learn from her.

"I really admire the New Zealand prime minister. She is wonderful," he told reporters in the Indian capital, where he addressed a conference of educators and students.

The Dalai Lama spends several months a year travelling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight the Tibetans' struggle for greater freedom in China.
